How Can My Major Make the World a Better Place

Sociology studies the development and evolution of societies, which means many things, as it is a very broad discipline. We are all part of the object of study, so sociological studies can change society itself, something that doesnt happen in other sciences, which makes it special. When societies are more aware of their characteristics and problems, they can more easily find their own right path to solve them. sociology is a tool to understand our society and change our reality. Sociology understands the complexity of our society's problems and can find ways to solve them. For example, the creation of JUNJI daycare centers was an effective way to integrate women into paid work, because the main reason for gender inequality in access to work is childcare. I can hardly imagine how many ways sociology can change the world. I only hope I can contribute to making it happen.

Post Graduate Studies. Sociology

I started my course without knowledge about what sociology really is. I always liked all humanistic and social sciences subjects, so I thought it was fine. Today I know that sociology is a really broad discipline and I have many options to choose a subject to specialize in. I would like to know more about the connection of economy and sociology, studying the creation and application of politics to solve social issues like inequality and vulnerability. Thinking about where I want to study, I’m not interested in student exchange programs, because sometimes adapt yourself to other places is an extra difficulty to your studies.  So far, I have only had online classes and I believe that this format has its benefits. For example, I don't have to waste time on transportation, so in the future I would like to study in a blended system, half online, half classroom classes.

Gabriel García Márquez (1927-2014) was a Colombian novelist who won the novel prize for literature in 1960. He grew up in the town of Aracataca where he lived with his grandfather, he told him traditional stories of Latin America, which influenced his future work. He studied law and journalism at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia and wrote for the newspaper "El Espectador". He supported and worked for the Cuban revolutionary government, for a short time. He moved to France and then to Spain, writing and meeting other important authors. His work is relevant because recreates the mythological and magical point of view of the Latin-American folklore in his books and gives it a place in the universal literature. Some of his most important works are “One hundred years of solitude”, “Litter”, and “Chronicles of a death foretold” One of my favorite books is “One hundred years of solitude” and I've reread it a couple of times.

A photograph and its story

Imagen
Hello everybody, for today’s entry I’m going to talk about this photograph. It is 5- or 6-years old me, speaking about my pet in front of my kindergarten classmates, it was like 15 years ago (because I’m 20 right now). My teacher took it and gave it to my mom. I was talking about Travieso, my dwarf bunny pet. I called him Travieso because the day I got him he was running and jumping everywhere. The time passed and he started to behave more mischievous and naughtier, he bit the phone and washing machine wires, stole potatoes and onions, and digging holes everywhere. One day he stops to eat and running, we discovered that he was ill health because stress, when he was alone in the backyard, the neighbor’s cats comes to scare him. Months after this pic was taken, Travieso died.

My Favorite Piece of Technology

Imagen
My favorite piece of technology is my portable hard disc. My brother gives me it as a birthday gift in my 13th birthday. It have 500gb of memory, a 3.0 usb output, some tape to keep it closed, and a sticker of Jonathan Joestar from the anime Jojo’s Bizarre Adventures.  I dont know if it is necessary to explain how to use it, you just connect it on a computer. In my portable disc I keep different things like, some phone and computer data backups, draws, music, and family pictures. I don’t use it really often, but I like it because it stores important things. My life without it would be similar to what is today because I don't use it in my daily life, but I would be sad if I lost all those files because some of them are important memories for me.

Why did I choose sociology?

Imagen
Hi everybody. Today I am going to talk about why I choose study sociology. When I was a child, I didn’t have a dreamed job, I rather played at working at many different jobs without thinking about the future. Then, in high school I started to worry about, I tried to complement aspects like personal interests, incomes, and employability of different carriers. In school I always got good marks in History and language, so I decided to orient my choice in that way. I thought of studying Psychology, Political science, and anthropology, but I decided to study sociology because I thought it would give me more options for academic development. My experience studying has been challenging and enriching. I have discovered so many new things that I don't know what awaits me in my Laboral future, but I hope it goes well. Social sciences faculty
